Hon George Foster Peabody announced a gift of 18000 dollars to the State Normal School for a new model school building to house a gymnasium domestic arts and sciences work. The prize drill of the Athens Guards last night drew a large crowd and stood as one of the companys most successful events. Sergeant Howard Tack won the medal, closely followed by Sergeant Will Ewing who won the Panama bat for best gun and soldierly appearance. Col. Zach Cobb gave two prizes, and Capt. McCurdy received a handsome cane donated by the company. Capt. McCurdy expressed thanks for the gift in a brief speech.

Tragedy at Tallulah Falls Ends in Wounding

Willingham Surrenders After Athens Shooting
Whit Willingham, a Black man, surrendered after a Wednesday afternoon shooting near Winterville left Mr. H. L. Gaulding seriously injured. He was arrested by Officer Felton and Bailiff Franklin near Brooklyn church and jailed in Clarke County. Willingham’s father urged protection before surrendering, and Willingham, who claims self defense, engaged attorney Geo O. Thomas to defend him.

Train Raid by Negro Bandits Ends in Murder Near Bridgeman
At Bridgeman a dispute aboard a fruit train led to two armed Negroes shooting one white man who refused to surrender money. The victim fell from the moving train near Lake Side as it sped along. The two Black assailants were later captured near New Buffalo. Sixty Families Are Homeless After Creede Fire Left Two Dead and Many Injured. Fire destroyed Upper Creede, Col., leaving the town in ruins and forcing dozens from their homes.
