Ralph C. Cochran of Atlanta mailed a 250 dollar candidacy fee to the Democratic executive committee for his bid to succeed Senator Hoke Smith. He says he announced first and will serve all Georgians, urging legislation to boost material and business interests, especially in the South.

General Ernesto Robert former Havana Province governor and Eugenio Aridas ex member of the house of representatives were sentenced to twelve years for killing General Armando Riva chief of the national police in Havana on July 19 1913. James S. Elton of Waterbury and William Skinner of Holyoke testified before the Interstate Commerce Commission that the acquisition of New England trolleys, steamship lines and other properties, costing millions, was to expand facilities. Elton cited the purchase of the New York Westchester & Boston Railway for eleven million, aimed at a foothold in New York's metro area. He said directors now set policy more directly, with Elliott described as deliberate and less influenced by figures like J. P. Morgan and former president Mellen.
A joint council and board of education committee report approved a contract for remodeling and adding to the county courthouse on Prince Avenue to create a high school building. Athens Contracting firm J. W. Walatom & Son to receive 19830 for work excluding heating and plumbing, with heating/plumbing to be let or supervised separately. Watson & Son expect to begin by the 10th and finish within ninety days, by September 106th.
A two pound newborn girl born March 13 at St Marys Hospital became the subject of a habeas corpus case in superior court. The judge sided with the hospital head nurse to maintain guardianship as plans were made to place the baby in a suitable home for orphans.
Yesterday an officer arrested Lela McRae for disorderly conduct after a melee at a corner store on DuBose Avenue. J A Gordon, who runs the store, says he was cursed at and threatened and defended himself with a cane. McRae’s seven year old son then jabbed Gordon in the back with an ice pick, causing a painful injury as a crowd of Black residents gathered nearby.
United States mediators press for Carranza representation as negotiations loom at Niagara Falls. Officials say no armistice between factions and Huerta delegates will not block constitutionalist participation, aiming to shape a peace plan amid delays and strategic pauses.
Georgia Tech football contest slated for Atlanta next season after Athletic Board vote. Board set contracts allowing Athens return if deemed advisable, elected managers for baseball and track, and approved funds for a training table and an assistant coach. Additional seating at Alumni Hall and field improvements referred to committees. Miniature gold baseballs awarded to 1914 IIAA champions players.
The old home place of Aunt Laura Billups on Prince Avenue was sold this week to Joe C. O Farrell proprietor of the Banner Printery. The property fronts Prince Avenue nearly 250 feet and may be improved or sold. Aunt Laura’s shop where cakes were baked for decades has ceased after her death, marking the loss of a longtime community figure. The new owner plans to consider building several cottages on the site.

A.V. Harrigan was shot dead near Bogart. Summers, charged with murder, was bound over to the superior court after a committing trial before Justice W. W. Dixon. Conflicting versions blame Harrigan or Summers with the fatal shooting. The state, aided by Bolipiter and Gamble, prosecutes.
The Watson Spring bridge over the Oconee river in Greene county was formally opened with a barbecue honor to Greene County Commissioner Jesse Sanders. Athens residents welcomed the new span, crediting plans by Professors Slack and Grahan and noting shorter routes to Watson Springs and Greensboro with future road improvements to enhance the belt line for a two hour round trip from Athens.
Mrs. B A Wilkes aged 56 years died at her home near Center in Jackson county Tuesday night after a brief illness. She is survived by her husband and ten children. Funeral and burial will be held this morning at the old family cemetery near Center with Rev Z Gpier conducting.
The Salvage Thalians staged a commencement play titled Balogge written by Victor Victor set in Atlanta Georgia. The tragedy follows a young Southern girl who marries to save her husband with acts one to three depicting fashionable homes and a midwinter hamlet scene. Cast includes Clark Howell Henry Howard Bowrd and Lyuion with Mesitsa Prakebalil Jenkins in key roles. The production aims to be a notable contribution to the New South portrayal.
Yesterday morning at eleven thirty services for Dr Samuel C Benedict were held at Emmanuel Church Athens. Faculty of University of Georgia and state health board pallbearers, with Rev Troy Beatty officiating. Casket taken to Oconee cemetery for final rites as heat affected runners and candidates in town observed.
