In Bartow County near Taylorsville on June 1 Harry N Hall was injured when a pistol or rifle magazine exploded while testing a relic firearm. Charles Hedges, assistant superintendent of the free delivery system, was sent from Washington to Atlanta to investigate reports that three letter carriers aided in the lynching and burning of Sam Hose. He returned saying the inquiry found no truth in the story.
Harmony Grove Ga June 1 The commencement exercises at Harmony Grove High School are in progress with junior and senior class dramas recitations and a dramatic finale. Prof Sylvanus Morris of the University of Georgia delivered the address on trusts and imperialism. The program includes a dramatic production Above the Clouds an operetta Zanie and diplomas for the seniors. The Hartwell baseball team visited for a three game series with scores 5 4 16 8 and 9 6 in favor of the Harmony Grove squad.
In Savannah on June 1 Miss Emmie Johnson, daughter of Colonel Johnson, was accidentally shot in the shoulder while examining an old pistol that had not fired for sixteen years. The wound is painful but not serious.
Dr. B F Riley of the University of Georgia invited General Joseph Wheeler to Athens to lecture. Wheeler replied from Washington May 25 1899 that he hoped to resume his military command soon and could not commit to a conditional engagement due to army duties.

Rev. W. D. Ernest, Methodist minister at Wyland near Birmingham, knocked out a noisy youth during a protracted meeting. The incident followed the youth’s threat to pull a pistol as he confronted the pastor from the pulpit. The youth was removed and cooled off as the congregation largely supported the pastor’s action.
