Joe Irick and his sixteen year old nephew Jimmy guide a frail coal broadhorn down the Mississippi when a girl falls aboard. Jimmy dives in and is aided by Joe who rescues the child and reunites her with her father Mr. Carroll, owner of the River Queen. Carroll approves Jimmy as second pilot and plans to place him aboard the River Queen, while William the rival pilot is to be kept by assurances from Carroll. The rescued girl thanks Jimmy and the crews celebrate with relief and news of future opportunities.
The Tammany Executive Committee pledged loyalty to Grover Cleveland and Adlai Stevenson. Croker said Cleveland is the stronger candidate and will win New York by a large majority, urging district leaders to boost turnout and heal disaffection. He signaled campaigning to begin late summer with district meetings and speeches.

A large rock torn from a wall allowed about thirteen inmates to escape at Jefferson's jail at one o'clock yesterday. Sheriff Collier and a posse pursued the escapees, with reports naming a murder suspect and a negro among the fugitives. The incident follows other noted crimes and local instability reported across the area.
