Two Mormon Elders arrived in Athens seeking to preach on streets and distribute literature. Mayor Smith denied the privilege saying their beliefs would not benefit citizens and warned of consequences if they persisted. Elders accused him of narrow mindedness while the mayor cited examples from other cities and pledged opposition. The elders remain in the city.
The Red Men held a busy Wednesday night installation of officers with seventeen positions filled and about forty candidates admitted. Local officers include C L Clark Rochem as Chief, D I Mulkey Senior Sagamore, A W Vess Junior Sagamore, and J N Saye Keeper of Wampum among others. The lodge is active and progressing.

He notes the seminary’s size and reach, and mentions presenting its formal offer tomorrow.
In Horry County near Conway South Carolina locals fear retribution from Black residents after Frank Green was killed by white boy John Dew. Coroner's inquest found Green the aggressor, Dew drew a knife and was jailed awaiting trial with expected acquittal.

Washington July 6 The secretary of war issued the call for enlisting ten new regiments of infantry for heavy fighting in the Philippines. The move aims to bolster forces as campaigns intensify in the region.
Elberton Knights of Pythias sent a delegation to Athens to take the O. M. A. degree, a unique side degree administered only by the Athens lodge. About forty Elberton members participated, receiving the degree and then enjoying a park barbecue. Names of participants include Capt. Geo. W. Brunson and C. D. Cox among others. The event followed a welcome reception in Athens and was praised as unusually interesting.
The old two-barrel cannon on the Athens city hall green attracts widespread talk. Invented by John Gilleland and cast at the Athens Foundry, it inspired national newspaper stories though its real combat value remains untested. It is a local relic with a storied past.
Athens youth Leos Morris, first honor student and top scholar at the University, will study medicine after a notable term. Described as diligent and conscientious, Morris is expected to achieve success in the medical field. Also advertised is a tobacco product called Ne-Bo-Bac for fifty cents.

Washington July 5 an order directing the enlistment of ten new regiments of volunteer infantry was prepared after a conference between the president and Adjutant General Corbin. The regiments numbered twenty six to thirty five will be raised under the March 2 1899 act. Major Edmund Rice of the Third infantry was named colonel of the Twenty sixth, the president's first selection.

The Raleigh News and Observer notes dye stuffs shipped from Pilot Cotton Mills to New York and returned by Seaboard Air Line to Raleigh for use in dyeing goods, with some shipments reaching San Francisco. Also announced is a telegal sale in Clarke County Georgia for a vacant Athens lot on Dougherty Street, with foreclosure action by order of court.
Public sale of printing office assets from the Athens Printing Office former occupant on Clayton street Athens Georgia. The Athens Savings Bank will offer the property including cabinet with 88 fonts and 36 point type two stands with 24 cases and a stapler machine at the courthouse door on the first Tuesday in August. Unpaid notes prompt full recovery of principal due and titles will be issued to the purchaser.
