Mrs Olivet, Beers' niece, had married Olivet years ago and faced alleged mistreatment. Her disappearance on January 8 followed by Olivet's departure prompts investigation.
In Bateille Jan 27 a Republican caucus adopted a resolution prepared by Senator Pritchard. The party said it has cooperated with the Populists and will cooperate with Populist elected members during the current general assembly. Senator Butler’s stance remains to be defined. Senator Pritchard has gone to Washington.

A mine blast at Smock mines Hurst & Co Amiestown Pa Jan 27 killed Peter Houser and Charles McQuister and wounded seven others, three mortally. The explosion followed a gas pocket ignited by open lamps as a dynamite blast undermined coal. rescuers recovered the injured by 10 pm, with Houser and McQuister dying soon after.
