Curiously Severe Verdicts in Tennessee Night Riders Case

The jury convicted six men of murder in the first degree under mitigating circumstances and two of murder in the second degree. Frank Fehringer testified that Bobi Huffman fired the fatal shot that killed Capt. Rankin at Reelfoot Lake. The six first degree verdicts seem illogical given the vile nature of the crime, and Judge Jones is slated to sentence all six to die. The Appalachian Forests bill faces likely defeat as Representative Scott opposes it, citing soil erosion from poor farming. Still, proponents urge perseverance, arguing the measure has merit and should be revisited.
