Des Moines, Dec 26. After divorcing a month earlier for incompatibility, Mrs. Harry Atkinson remarried her ex-husband’s memory in Ames just minutes before his fatal railroad wreck. The couple’s reconciliation followed a quiet divorce, leaving relatives unaware until today.
Grand Island Neb Dec 26 George Poell county clerk elect was awarded the first Medal of Honor under the 1905 act for saving a child at the risk of his own life while working as a locomotive fireman. He sprang from the pilot to snatch the child from the track but was dragged under the engine and badly injured. A note says many Democratic papers criticize John Sharp Williams over congressional leadership.
Terre Haute December 26 Ina Smith twelve is bedridden and partly paralyzed after a quarrel over city politics between two girls. One restrained her while the other struck her in the back injuring the spine and nearly silencing her. Doctors fear no lasting harm though serious condition persists. Georgia not affected by plan to reduce congressional representation. the state’s negros not disfranchised by law but effectively so under the democratic primary system.
The trustees meeting scheduled for the 29th in Atlanta has been postponed due to Chancellor Hill illness. No new date is set. it will occur when the chancellor is able to attend. Several important matters will be discussed and settled at the rescheduled session.
United States Civil Service Commission announces examinations for juniors firemen and watchman to be held in this city on January 13. No educational test. age physical condition and experience determine eligibility. Age 21 to 50, veterans exempt from age rule. For details contact the postmaster.
Mr J M Mallory, formerly of this city and now in Savannah, has been appointed industrial agent for the Central system with headquarters in Savannah. He will assume charge of the office on January 1.
In San Antonio on December 26 miners employed by Albert Talpas of Etalpapa Mexico found grains of gold in fowl crops on land bought from Mexicans between Etalpapa and San Gambrial. The placer land, measuring about 10 meters by 500 meters and covering 400 partenencia, has been sold in Guadalajara for 150000 dollars.
A local ordinary reports a rising Christmas trade in marriage licenses. On Christmas Day he issued five licenses, yesterday six, most going to Black patrons with a few to White couples. December typically yields the most licenses, and this December surpasses all prior months.
Josiah A. Zottman, 75, longtime Big Four Railroad foreman in Cleveland, has not slept for 53 days. His wife and physician say age related infirmities, poor circulation, swollen limbs, and heart issues impair rest. Doctors aim to restore strength and enable sleep without medicine.
An advertisement urges readers to improve health by eating well and taking Dr. King's New Life Pills. It promises prompt relief for liver and stomach trouble and mentions availability at H. R. Palmer & Sons and W. J. Smith & Bro. drug stores with a guarantee.
County political interest grows as J. A. Pitner faces E. I. Smith for county treasurer. Other officials Weir, Crawford, Linton, and Dorsey lack opposition. Clarke county may elect a legislature rep in 1907 1908 with J. H. Rucker likely seeking another term and T. S. Mell urged to run. Primary set for July or August with many citizens contemplating candidacy.
Washington December 26 United States district attorney for Nebraska Irving Baxter has been removed summarily by President Roosevelt. Baxter prosecuted Richards and Comstock for fencing public lands in Nebraska. The U S marshal deputized attorneys for Richards and Comstock to handle the six hour sentence. No successor named. Also an advertisement appears for Chamberlains Stomach and Liver Tablets and local print shop notices.
Hunter Coke Hunter a white man charged with the murder of J. W. Haynie at Statham was released on a one thousand dollar bond after a committal trial before a Statham justice. Judge Russell set the bond. the case bound over for Jefferson superior court next session. Grand jury inspection planned for February.
Paul H. McDonald of Atlanta formerly a first lieutenant in the Tenth U S infantry has been pardoned by President Roosevelt and will be released from Fort Leavenworth prison at once. The Atlanta native rose from private to officer before a court martial convicted him for obtaining money under false pretense. The pardon cites his prior good military record and leaves his future location and business plans uncertain.
R Wells, a well known Union county man, was shot and killed this afternoon by Don Cleaveland, Meridian city marshal. Wells had just walked up and slapped Cleaveland familiarly on the back. The cause is not known. The Waycross Herald says it seeks political trouble and aims to place a South Georgia man in the governor race.
Henrietta A S Marsh of Los Angeles reports suffering from la grippe for seven weeks before using Peruna. She notes immediate improvement and full restoration within three weeks. A letter dated August 31 1904 quotes Mr Marsh endorsing Peruna’s efficacy after travels in Kentucky and Tennessee.
Ed M Dottery of this city and Tom Murray of Comer Ga were arrested on charges of robbing Will Collins who lives nearby. The grand jury found insufficient evidence for a bill and returned a verdict of no bill, allowing the pair to go free amid their relief and friend’s cheers.
Thousands of gallons of beer drenched flames at the Oklahoma Ice and Brewing Company when the city waterworks failed to provide pressure after a pumping station breakdown. Firemen attached hoses to the vats and sprayed beer on the blaze until supply ended, with chemical extinguishers finally bringing the fire under control.
