Sultan Hears the Phonograph
Chicago reports Captain Smyler recounts how a phonograph aided negotiations with the sultan of the Sulu archipelago. After the treaty draft, the device drew the sultan’s party into a panic then allowed him to speak, sign, and confirm his words when heard again. The voyage with General Bates toured the island authority.
