The Disbanding of the Confederate Army
After Lee’s surrender on April 9 the Confederate army faced disbandment and dispersed across a ruined land. Many walked home penniless through desolated towns from Virginia to Texas, while Union aid allowed some to keep their horses and mules. The South’s destruction and the struggle to survive test the endurance and resolve of Lee’s soldiers and civilians alike.
