Robert Shamblin, charged with robbing Mobile’s People's Bank of $6,000, was arrested in Cairo Illinois after arriving from New Orleans posing as J B Morrison. Mobile authorities wired Cairo police with a detailed description and the suspect, who admitted the embezzlement but refused to reveal his true name. An officer has departed Mobile for the arrest.

Jones introduces resolution of thanks to Schley
In Washington on December 16 the Senate opened with a chaplain's plea for Senator Sewell's recovery. Representative Jones of Arkansas introduced a joint resolution praising Rear Admiral Schley and his fleet for the destruction of the Spanish squadron at Santiago de Cuba on July 3, 1898, urging the president to communicate the resolution to Schley and his men. referred to Naval Affairs. The day also saw a West resolution on restricting anarchy and safeguarding presidents. a true bill was returned against Theodore and Laura Jackson. Sewell’s condition was reported as weak with a risk of relapse. Rev. John W. Lewis accepted Meridian pastorate.
