The State vs Nelson McCombs, tried in Superior court on Broad street, resulted in a guilty verdict. Judge Hammond sentenced him to five years in the penitentiary for the robbery of an old man, warning he will think twice before snatching another purse.
At the capitol today it was reported that Associate Justice John B. Candler may resign from the Georgia Supreme Court. Judge Candler said there is nothing definite yet and he does not know what the next week or ten days may bring.
In Quebec on December 7 rotten eggs were thrown at actress Sarah Bernhardt after a performance at the Auditorium. The attack followed a controversial interview in L Evenment. About 200 men and boys blocked exits. Mr Max was struck, and further eggs were thrown as Bernhardt departed by sleigh.
Yesterday afternoon the committee responsible for purging illegal names from the registration list reported to the mayor and council. The panel's careful work left only legal names, enabling the city to collect significantly more tax revenue. Alderman O’Farrell moved to extend the banks of the council to the committee, comprising Aldermen McMahan and Snelling.
Washington reports that Senator Bacon was named a regent of the Smithsonian Institution upon the suggestion of Chief Justice Fuller. The senate will appoint Bacon to succeed ex Senator Cockrell, with Senator Lodge to replace the late Senator Platt of Connecticut. Alabama signals a likely gubernatorial race as Georgia eyes a similar contest.
A Norfolk based company has secured the grading contract for a new railroad project. Officials announce the award as part of the ongoing construction program, with work expected to start promptly and set the stage for subsequent track and infrastructure phases.
Gwathmey and Mackall of Norfolk Virginia won the grading contract for the Athens and Jefferson railroad. Work will start within two weeks with preliminaries underway now and rails and tiles already arranged. Officials expect completion and operation by September next.
Yesterday the mayor and council canvassed election returns and declared the regularly elected mayor and aldermen. Aldermen Snelling Vonderau and Harris were appointed to canvass the totals, which showed Mayor W F Dorsey received the mayoral vote while W C Weatherford 102 in Ward One, F G Whitehead 93 in Ward Two, F A Lipscomb 56 in Ward Three, and H J Rowe 103 in Ward Four.
Russell Wright, a colored man, was tried in Superior court yesterday for larceny after trust. A white man once gave him money to buy whiskey at the dispensary, Wright took the funds and left. the man did not see the money or liquor again. Judge Hammond sentenced Wright to twelve months in the county chain gang.
Judge H. C. Hammond is accompanied on all trips by a loyal dog. The animal sits on the bench during proceedings, watches witnesses and attorneys, and has become a familiar, affectionate presence at the Clarke Superior court session.

Judge Russell dissolved the Cooper injunction, and the mayor and council adopted the order as part of the minutes. Alderman Snelling moved to record the court order, noting the vacancy in the first ward seat due to removal during the injunction proceedings and until the decision.
The mayor and council announced the expiration of the board of education terms for R. C. Orr from the first ward and G. H. Palmer from the second ward. Alderman O Farrell nominated Dr. Orr for reelection praising him, while Alderman Vonderal nominated Mr. Palmer for reelection. Both were unanimously re elected by acclamation.
Vincent T. Sanford who shot and killed George Wright in Rome last July 19 was brought to Atlanta this afternoon and placed in the Tower. He traveled with Deputy Sheriffs Ed Camp and T. P. Broach from Floyd County, arriving by Southern train from Chattanooga. Sanford appeared well dressed and in good spirits, making no fuss as he walked between the officers. He was moved to the Tower after his Rome arraignment and complained of conditions in that prison during a hearing.
The Superior court remains in session today as most ready trials have occurred and little business remains for Judge Hammond. The morning docket lists the state versus George Simpson charged with assault and battery. The Macon Telegraph urges Congress to address the Dingley tariff act to root out graft.
Old Cemetery and adjacent property spark debate as University of Georgia contemplates campus expansion. The council orders a hearing and may defer, or proceed with, grading from Broad to Baldwin while considering a pathway that could bend Jackson Street east through the cemetery to Cemetery Street.
Cleveland reports Dalgas Ignatz, a foreigner, driven mad after his first bath in five years. Arrested for vagrancy, fined, then bathed at the prison, he became a raving maniac and was placed in a padded cell. Physicians call the case puzzling and note no medical precedent for insanity caused by a bath. Also mentions croup guidance and local druggists.
An advertisement recounts Mrs. M. Brickner’s recovery after using Peruna. It claims many illnesses stem from catarrh and that curing catarrh heals other organs. It invites readers to write to Dr. Hartman in Columbus for free advice.
Atlanta December 7 a total of 1 711 544 will be distributed as Georgia's 1906 school fund a decrease from 1905 due to convict labor policy. The fund funds come from direct taxes poll taxes and other sources with 109 counties to receive over 200 000 from convict hire. Apportionment is based on last census and will be made this week by State School Commissioner W B Meritt.
