In eastern Arapahoe County near the Kansas line about 800 residents face near starvation as crops have utterly failed. The brief dispatch from Denver reports widespread crop failure affecting the local economy and households.
Frank Miller, a young Negro, risked his life on Main Street when a carriage horse ran wild toward a post. He sprinted to the animal, leaped onto its back, seized the reins, and halted the horse just in time. No one was injured beyond fright. a purse was raised to honor the rescuer.
In Betton Texas on August 4 W H Tweedle barged into A B Tylers residence threatening Mrs Tyler with a gun. Mrs Tyler escaped seized a six shooter and repelled him. Tweedle returned with his son George and a negro, firing on Mrs Tyler wounding her and a boy. George Tweedle shot Tyler as he came to aid them. all surrendered and are jailed. The negro was captured and jailed. No motive known.
News from Wolfpen Bartow county reports two Byers boys explode while handling powder near a hot stove and are beyond help. Also reported is the death of Mrs. William B. Dodd in New York. In Dawson the 11th senatorial convention debated endorsements for John B Gordon and A C Hill. Heard County Democrats held a mass meeting to rescind a speaker and to pledge support for the Democratic nominee in the primary.
