Paris dispatches detail Faure’s exit from the capital amid a bomb blast along his route to Russia with little damage or casualties. Crowds cheered as the president departed and officials investigate the incident, while Faure’s Moscow visit plan unfolds with receptions, hospital cornerstone laying, and a grand banquet. Anarchist provocations continue, including a man arrested on Faure’s train with a loaded revolver.
An African American youth about 19 was found in the room of a 17 year old girl in Apalachicola Florida. He fled toward a window but a shotgun stopped him and he was tied to a porch post. Late night armed men removed him to Gad Lake where he was bound and thrown into the water. This is the fifth man reported “lost” in two years.
Colonel Nesbitt gains momentum in a dispute over guano tag contracts with the Blalock committee. Swift claimed 17 cents per 1000 for Manila tags, but Nesbitt’s inquiry shows the 17 cent bid excludes hooks and labor. The total would rise to about 47 cents per 1000 with hooks and labor, plus extra for freight, for a lower quality tag.
The Boston Transcript editorial attacks Mrs. W. H. Felton of Cartersville Ga for her ag society address. It accuses politicians of courting black support on election day and warns lynching could rise if blacks are treated as equals. The piece questions southern women and condemns what it sees as anti black sentiment.
Aug 18 in MBerssure Pa buyers from New York and other cities gather as the Blue mountain peach belt opens its expected full crop. Growers prefer picking and shipping themselves. Rail lines show cars and baskets ready for assembly as Chambersburg growers threaten 10,000 crates each, while Cumberland Way Road plans spec trains to haul fruit both east and west. Some premature ripening reports from Smithsburg Maryland, but overall fruit quality declines slightly from best.
London papers report The Westminster Gazette and The Times editorialize against reopening Indian mints for silver. They say demonetization is advancing as Japan and Russia adopt it, urging India not to yield to silver market threats. Also listed are receivers appointed for an insurance company in Boston with bonds of 25,000 each and a temporary injunction.
The 1821 legend of millions buried on Cocos Island drew Victoria B C seafaring men and Mrs Mary Brennan aboard the schooner Aurora led by Captain Fred Hackett returning without treasure. Charles Hartford, a passenger, claims he found the cache and plans to recruit another vessel to claim thirty million dollars, after resisting the operators' division terms.
Annita Hemming, a Black graduate of Vassar, secures a public library position in Boston. The narrative traces her family rise from the West End to Martha's Vineyard, noting schooling at Prince Grammar, English High, Northfield prep, and ties to Lawyer Henry Lewis and Bessie Baker.
W B Fuller known as Bud of Woodbury is arrested in Atlanta as the father of the crippled child found near the city. Dr J M Hooten identified the child as Fuller's, who says he did not abandon the infant and tried to place it at Grady hospital but could not pay. He left the child with Mrs Willingham for five dollars care. The hospital physician noted the child was not his and too weak to be cared for. Fuller remains in custody pending a full inquest.
The Stalwart Dorm of Deputies obstructs a planned miner march toward the New York and Cleveland Gas Coal Company mines. Deputies flank Turtle Creek camps as leaders plan to harass lawmen and press workers to stay away. About 20 men remain in the district, with injunctions to be read multiple times to halt attacks on Oak Hill Sandy Creek and Plum Creek mines.
In a Pittsburgh hearing August 18 judges Stowe and Collier made permanent the injunction sought by New York and Cleveland Gas Coal Co against the United Mine Workers of America and named defendants Dolan Warner and others. A $5,000 bond was required to cover damages to the defendants from the injunction. The court also ordered a similar decree in the case against Bundla miners represented by Rufus Crawford.
Wheeling sees coal demand surge as local supply from Floersheim mines tightens. Gas works face shortages, coal selling at 12 cents a bushel, slack at 6 cents, with 500 families desperate for fuel. Pittsburg market holds 5 to 5 1/4 cents per bushel amid scarce shipping. Funds sought to support strikers, house-to-house canvassing planned in Pittsburg and Allegheny. One strike settled at Portstown mill with 800 workers returning to work.
W B L Davis a 60 year old wealthy farmer three miles west of Rockmart Ga was killed at 5 a m by the accidental explosion of 17 dynamite cartridges placed under a kitchen stove to dry. The kitchen and dining room were wrecked and the body badly burned. In Montgomery County Ala the board of revenue orders compulsory vaccination to prevent smallpox spread with Dr Owens assigning a vaccinator to each beat to begin immediately.
A Vergara court martial hastens Angiolillo's execution after his murder of Canovas. Guards with fixed bayonets seal the courtroom as the anarchist defies the judges before being sentenced to death by garrote. He faces solitary confinement until he is led to death behind Vergara prison walls.
Superior Judge Allen rule voids numerous sea marriages performed off the California coast. The habeas corpus case followed Janet Thompson and Homer Norman as they wed on a ship with the captain officiating. The decision cites 1895 changes to define marriage and rejects offshore unions not compliant with state law. A separate Washington note reports James Eckels to become president of Seven Formed Colonial Trust with a $15,000 annual salary, as Charles Dawes moves to comptroller of the currency.
Detroit. Aug 17. The twenty third annual American Bankers Association convention opened at the opera house with President Lowry presiding. Mayor Maybury welcomed delegates and Governor Pingree urged increased primary money and tax reforms for banking capital. He suggested a tax on refined gold products and argued property including money should bear public burden without double taxation. The governor also noted rising gold discoveries and savings bank growth as signs of returning prosperity. An Alabama note reported tax commissioner suspension for non-enforcement.
