Special to the Banner reports Clarke Oglethorpe and Wilkes counties forming the 50th senatorial district. House and senate debate over school appropriations and copper business continues. Key bills pass or stall as lawmakers clash on budgets and district lines before adjournment.
Capt James Fitzmorris of the Royal Flying Corps was killed in Cincinnati by the fall of his machine. In Pensacola Florida Joseph John Fenton a Vermont student aviator died when a seaplane fell in Pensacola bay marking the fourth aviator death in as many days at the site.
Atlanta dispatch reports Hon Brick Miller re appointed to the board of trustees of the State Normal School by Governor Dorsey to succeed himself. A former Harris appointee from the Fourth district, Miller will serve six years from August 27 1918 and has served as board chairman.
A seven thousand dollar mausoleum with finishings and fencing will bring the total to about 9,860 dollars at the grave of the late Hon. James M. Smith in Smithonia Oglethorpe County. The contract for erection was let yesterday for the memorial to the Georgia farmer.
Associated Press reports in Washington on August 14 29 women were arrested in Lafayette Square across from the White House for staging a demonstration against the senate delay on the federal suffrage amendment. After a second arrest they refused bail saying they would press the protest if released. Police held the women until crowds dispersed, releasing them late in the evening.
County commissioners steadily distribute road machinery to citizens who contracted to maintain sections of public roads. Machines will scrape and drag to perform the needed maintenance.
In Birmingham on August 14 the Alabama Democratic gubernatorial primary appears decided by under 3,000 first choice votes separating Thomas E Kilby and W W Brandon. Kilby leads by about 8,000 per Kilby’s camp while Brandon’s backers say they are 1,000 ahead. Brandon’s second choice votes may decide the outcome. Huddleston wins a 1,900 majority over both opponents, and a pay bill fails 1 to 63 with 95 needed. Senator Ficklen’s home polling bill is tabled.
German positions on five miles of front north of Albert evacuated. French forces drive from hill and woods north of the Oise near Bray Somme to Etingham. British and French press on Chaulnes and Roye while Ribecourt falls to the French marking a new offensive phase. Substantial air combat with 21 German planes shot down and allied air support. Submarine sinkings fall in July. Entente losses exceed enemy destruction.
Mrs George A Mell chairs the state women’s organization for Liberty Loan drives and already plans for the Fourth Issue. County chairmen are named in Clarke Elbert Franklin Madison Newton Oconee Putnam Walton and other counties. The group is organizing militia and ward chairs as campaigns begin in a few days.
Clarke County shows progress toward the twenty dollar per capita goal in War Savings Stamps, yet per person purchases average only $6.09. Georgia’s state totals to date include a July sales figure of $1,896,074 and a remaining balance of $50,067,476 toward the yearly quota of $57,500,000.
Consul General Poole at Moscow has handed over duties, burned his code book, and requested safe conduct to return to the United States. Dispatches from Stockholm report his move as part of Allied pressure on Bolshevik leaders Lenin and Trotzky. If the Moscow government falls Poole may be able to stay on with a new regime.
Washington reports rabbits once seen as a curse in Australia and the southwest U S are now profitable for war support. Official dispatches say Britain orders 600000 crates of skinned rabbits, requiring 21600000 animals and 36000000 pounds after dressing. Washington August 14 The American troops at home and overseas are setting a world record for health and a low death rate Surgeon General Gorgas announced deaths from disease among soldiers for the week of July 26 at 19 per thousand annually never surpassed by any military establishment.
Rolland Saye eighteen joins the U S Navy at Newport Rhode Island as a musician before the suspension order. He is the third son of Alex Saye, with two brothers in service Robert in spruce production division of the aviation department and Tescoe Baye in the navy.
County Officer Sage was called to the Nurrelle place to a report that Tob More, a middle aged colored man, threatened his family. He claimed law was applied after a weapon incident and a stepson used a hammer to stop him from harming them.
Atlanta August 14 Major Joel B. Mallet says under a UK treaty American citizens abroad may enlist in the American Expeditionary Force without returning home. Local boards will issue induction orders with far forward report dates, placing enlisted abroad in Class V, with enlistment abroad designated by the AEF commanding general.
Police nabbed John Marable, brother of Isaac Marable, on an old anti prohibition charge. The blotter noted Prohibition on his name and the arrest marks the suspects’ familiar ties to control spirit dispensing and law avoidance.
County officer Sage today filed state cases against Seab Scarborough and J M Preston two white men charged with being drunk on the pub highway of the county. They will be tried in the city court next week after waiving preliminary trial and posting bond.
