How They Buried Him Deadwood Mass Burial of Methodist Minister Henry Smith
Deadwood miners held a mass funeral for Reverend Henry Weston Smith, killed and scalped on the Deadwood trail in 1876 en route to Crook City. With no clergy, United States Marshal Seth Bullock and others drew lots to read a prayer, using the Lord’s Prayer after an impromptu prayer book search in Doc Carter’s gambling hall, as the ill-fated service proceeded with hymn singing at the cemetery.
