Hoke Smith Plans Independent Run If Defeated in Primary
A Georgia political column accuses Hoke Smith of a double game in the 1906 governor race. It cites alleged deals with Tom Watson and Populists, urging followers to oppose him and suggesting he would bolt the Democratic primary if defeated. Affidavits from Oconee and Clarke Counties allege Smith told Populist delegates he would run on the Populist ticket if not nominated.
