The German army admits failure and vows the greatest struggle of the war while crown prince troops are worn out amid renewed Allied advances. Reports say Allied forces show little activity as they push to clear the German salient, with heavy bombardment and gas shells on their lines. The Kaiser issues a proclamation calling for unity as the battle wages on.
Jack Dempsey the California heavyweight boxer who knocked out Red Fulton at Newark last week has signed with the Knights of Columbus as a physical director. He probably will be assigned to Camp Gordon in Atlantia in July.
Western Union operators discharged for joining the Commercial Telegraphers' Union will resume duty tomorrow after the government takes over the wires. Atlanta district council president A. F. Joyner said the men expect quick restoration to duty as government control ends.
Washington July 31 control of all telephone and telegraph lines was assumed by the post office department and placed under a special committee created by Postmaster General Burleson. Operators will remain on their jobs and operate through normal channels while the plan to coordinate facilities to best serve the public and stockholders is carried out.

Tuesday night in the Lumpkin building stairway in this city Judge T B Wootten and Mr John Mappin fought in a violent encounter sparked by a note signed Ku Klux found under Wootten’s door. Wootten claimed Mappin denied involvement and the clash ended with Wootten prevailing as the struggle ceased after assistance arrived.
Washington announces the fourth Liberty Loan campaign to run September 28 to October 19. Secretary McAdoo says the three week length allows more business men to enlist as workers. The loan target is about 6 billion dollars at four and a quarter percent interest.
London readers received the Marquis of Lansdowne's peace letter at a supporters conference. The missive offers no new policy, criticizes Allied war aims, and calls for terms discussion. It notes Lansdowne as a pacifist while accepting the Fourth of July speech as a grand vision.
Winterville resident John T. Pittard was elected president of the Georgia Ginners Association at a Macon meeting. Earlier, North Georgia ginners formed in Athens and South Georgia ginners formed elsewhere, uniting both groups into the new Georgia Ginners Association with Pittard as leader.
The federal government will assume free state recruitment of common labor to support wartime industry. Labor needs will be allocated by state population, moving workers to meet demand while stabilizing wages and boosting essential production. The plan was announced at a luncheon honoring Secretary of Labor Wilson by Council of National Defense secretary Grosvenor B. Clarkson amid a newspaper publishers’ gathering.
Dr. Howard W. Odum will report in Atlanta as general field director for the Home Service department of the American Red Cross overseeing military camps in five Southern states. Associate field directors include W. O. Payne and R. Pond of the University of Georgia with headquarters at various camps.
Miss Sallie Dobson now heads the Athens Canning Company plant with four regular assistants and ten reserve helpers. The plant can process about 6,000 cans daily but is slightly under due to vegetable shortages. The facility is noted as very clean and has been approved by the city health department and canning club officials.
The announcement states that in the selective draft the emergency fleet is under deferred classification. Officials emphasize seriousness and sober preparation while noting vaudeville stars fail to draw crowds.
