A modest poet from Athens, whose name remains unknown, offers a six line verse forecasting the Georgia gubernatorial contest. The poem, dated June 4, frames the political scene with a clear message to voters and hints at Hoke and Joe in a contentious race.
The Banner carries the announcement that Ben H. Barrow seeks the county surveyor post. Barrow, a Athens native and son of Chancellor David C. Barrow, is described as highly qualified and likely to run unopposed. Strahan, the incumbent, declines reelection and endorses Barrow with high praise.
