The city council publishes and enacts an amended speed ordinance for Athens. It sets maximum speeds of ten miles per hour within fire limits and fifteen miles per hour outside fire limits for gasoline powered vehicles, with halves on curves and crossings. Violations count as negligence under city code section 299.
The Atlanta city council, by a large vote, enacted an ordinance requiring express companies to report daily to police all whiskey shipments received in Atlanta. The measure faces likely legal challenges as it takes effect, with enforcement to follow. The Union and Mechanic club won a temporary injunction against city liquor rules. permanent injunction hearing set for April 15. Little Judge Corrigan blames Mayor Gaynor for Gotham crime wave.
The April council meeting tackled property records for the Athens Park and Improvement Company, street lighting, school funding, and Hampton avenue grading. Budget approval, new fire alarm boxes, and a city stockade plan progressed, while personnel changes and street openings were discussed before adjournment.
A large gathering of Athens mothers and women at the YMCA yesterday heard Miss Parrish speak on adolescent development and the boys’ toys program. They urged hiring a full-time secretary and modern facilities to support youth growth, with over 60 attendees and early donations noted.
Fully 300 people gathered in the senate chamber at the capitol this morning for the hearing on the pardons petition of Thomas Edgar Stripling of Harris county, the convicted murderer who escaped years ago and became Danville chief of police. The crowd includes relatives from multiple counties and even visitors from Danville and Washington. The board may recommend full clemency, but Governor Brown’s stance remains uncertain.
Mr W D Arthur a prominent citizen aged 62 died suddenly at his Lumpkin Street home after a few hours illness from a stroke. Survived by wife and seven children, funeral Saturday at 2 30 pm in Watkinsville. Arthur praised as a good man and citizen with many mourners among friends and family.
In a four count libel case the Coca Cola company of Athens won a verdict in federal court at Chattanooga yesterday afternoon. The government appealed to Cincinnati. The trial drew wide attention and lasted six weeks with forty barrels and twenty kegs of Coca Cola syrup examined.
The Phi Kappa Literary society at the University of Georgia announced yesterday the sophomore debaters for the commencement debate. Winners were R. Hill Freeman of Newnan, Edgar B. Dunlap of Gainesville, and Edward Morganstern of Atlanta. Final selections for the sophomore class speakers will be made tomorrow amid many contenders from the society. Also referenced is opposition to a national attorney general candidate from Boston and a white university background.
Atlanta and Carolina Railway progress announced with Adams and Sturm of Columbus Ohio contracted to grade from Atlanta to Augusta. First section to start at once, others to follow. Mason says line could be under construction this year with rapid track laying and equipment once miles are completed.
The cadet corps at the university reports Lieut J A Atkins commandant of cadets will go to Fort Scriven on April 13 for a promotion examination. Afterward he will return to Athens to resume duties. Atkins has led two years of growth in the military department and the current battalion is among the best in the university’s history. The cadet corps wishes him success in the examination and awaits the result.
A three day institute under the Minneapolis Playground Commission opened to discuss plans to advance the playground movement across the district. Delegates from Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Missouri and the Dakotas attended, with figures from Atlanta and other cities among the speakers and participants.
The Cotton States League opened its 120 game schedule in Jackson Mississippi with games set in Hattiesburg Yazoo City and Greenwood. Jackson meets Yazoo City on the latters grounds while Hattiesburg hosts Meridian and Vicksburg faces Greenwood in the season opener. The pennant race runs through August 23.
Virginia delegates begin a three day session in Charlottesville for the annual Virginia Young Men's Christian Association convention. Representing railroad and student branches, the gathering is described as the largest of its kind in Virginia with speakers including Dr. Charles W. Kent of the University of Virginia J C Moss of Lynchburg J A Whitmore of the international committee Rev T Claggett Skinner D D of Roanoke and Congressman Richmond F P Hobson among the scheduled speakers.
Colonel Theodore Roosevelt arrived in Seattle after a morning at Taroma and was warmly greeted. He planned to stay until tomorrow morning before heading to Spokane. The program included university student address and other entertainments.
Several hundred delegates gathered in Greely Colorado for the annual district convention of the Religious Educational Association. Notable divines and educators attended from across the territory as discussions covered district concerns and planned programs for the year.
