Many Meigs Men Worked on River
POMEROY Ohio Sept 29 Old river men recall a flourishing river trade from the mid 1800s to the late 1800s with many locals employed on steamboats. The Ohio carried passengers between Pomeroy and Cincinnati, while the Elmo served the Pomeroy Cincinnati route until 1851 when the Ohio No 3 surpassed it. Milton Cooley once postmaster captained the Ohio and James Ralston replaced him after Polk removed Cooley. Ledlie allegedly used influence to back Ralston in a local political row.
