Nelsonville Barrows family ties to canal era and railroad legacy
The Barrows family of Nelsonville, long rooted in Athens County since George H. Barrows born 1833, spans canal and railway eras. The Peter Barrows home on West Columbus Street once hosted stage coach tavern days and linked to Brooks coal interests. John Barrows, elder son, preserves canal and rail memories including Nelsonville’s first locomotive and coal haul, while the family marks a golden wedding anniversary observed on Sept 16.
