The vice president seeks vindication amid federal grand jury scrutiny over Maryland graft links. A federal grand jury in Baltimore began hearing evidence in a broad probe of political corruption involving Vice President Spiro T. Agnew. Agnew's lawyers sought an injunction to halt the inquiry but the move failed. The case could raise questions about whether a vice president can be indicted before impeachment. Marshals maintained tight security around the courthouse as the panel met.
The Communications Workers strike over General Telephone caused outages as crews repaired lines damaged by vandals. The company claimed losses exceed 1 million dollars and blamed union leaders for a hitch in a handshake agreement.
In Marion Ohio General Telephone offers 25 percent average wage hike to 2800 striking operators and installer repairmen who will vote by Oct 3. The 74 day walkout disrupted service across 70 Ohio counties with a tentative pact running to July 15 1975 and possible June 15 1974 renegotiation for the wage clause.
A federal grand jury indicted Anthony P. LaFatch of Akron for soliciting a $50,000 bribe in exchange for favors from the Ohio Department of Commerce. No state officials were indicted in the case.
Deposed mine union leader W. A. Tony Boyle, 71, is in critical condition at George Washington University Hospital after developing a rapid, irregular heartbeat. Spokesmen say he was hospitalized Monday night and doctors believe he attempted death by his own action.
Skylab 2 astronauts Alan L. Bean Owen K. Garriott and Jack R. Lousma leave the recovery carrier USS New Orleans for Texas to reunite with their wives. A space agency flight surgeon says they are readapting rapidly to gravity and their recovery from weightlessness is just short of amazing.
Tass reports a manned Soviet spaceship placed into earth orbit with pilot Lt. Col. Vasily Lazarev and flight engineer Oleg Makarov aboard. The officials state both crew members feel well and on-board systems function normally with no further details released.
