Switzerland launches the Nufenenpass as the highest and most direct route between Valais and Ticino. The 22 mile shortcut from Ulrichen to Airolo saves about two hours and avoids two northern passes. The steep road preserves dramatic scenery and remains challenging for inexperienced mountain drivers. Originally a 14th century mule trail.
