John Finsterwald 83 former Athens County sheriff died at his home 23 Rose Ave at 7 this morning after illness since June. He served as sheriff 1890 to 1894 and as deputy to Sheriff Fred Stalder. He was former postmaster and internal revenue collector, a farmer coal mine operator and delivery service owner. Active Republican, he chaired county and district party activities. Born 1859 in Athens Township, he leaves two daughters two sons seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral Sunday at 2 pm at his residence with burial in W Union Street Cemetery. callers welcome after 2 pm Saturday.

In Dickeron Maryland twelve bodies were recovered from the wreckage of three trains after a head on collision between two passenger trains and a fast freight. One engineer was charged with manslaughter as state police continued identifying victims and removing wreckage.
Postmaster General Frank C. Walker said postal workers may receive a 15 percent raise under a bill in Congress and that women will be used as mail carriers in some cities. He noted about 18,000 workers have been called to the colors, with women carriers filling roles as in the last war. The Associated Press reports.
Washington AP reports Lieut Gen Jonathan M Wainwright and about 6000 American defenders of Bataan and Corregidor are war captives at a Tarlac camp north of Manila. A 200 name partial list includes Maj Gen William F Sharp Brig Gen Lewis C Beebe Clinton A Pierce and Fidel V Segundo. Capt Kenneth Hoeffel is the sole American listed by the War Department as held in the Philippines.
Major General Lewis B. Hershey threatens to remove workers from war plants that defer draft coverage. He urges faster training to replace temporarily deferred workers and calls for mobilizing students, housewives, and the elderly into labor as the war effort requires.
The Senate unanimously approved up to $5000 for an inquiry into a ban by James C Petrillo head of the American Federation of Musicians on making musical records and transcriptions for radio stations and juke boxes. Chairman Wheeler of the Interstate Commerce Committee said a subcommittee would be formed soon to lead a full inquiry into Petrillo activities.
Reuters dispatch from Zurich quotes survivors of the latest heavy RAF attack on Karlsruhe estimating 8 000 to 10 000 residents killed. Eyewitness reports say at least two thirds of the city razed or badly damaged with only outlines of ruined buildings remaining.
Charleston reports the death of George W. McClintic a veteran federal jurist aged 76. He was famed as the father of the federal probation system.
Larry Allen AP correspondent captured in the Tobruk raid on Sept 15-14 demanded an interview with Field Marshal Rommel. Axis captors refused. Berlin radio later confirmed Allen among those captured, marking the first Axis mention of the Pulitzer winner.
