Man killed by elephant at Van Amburgh Menagerie
Early Sabbath morning Mr. Lambert Hart aged about 60 of Guernsey was slain by an elephant from Van Amburgh and Co. exhibited in the village the day before. Despite warnings by the keeper Hart approached and offered liquor and tobacco, provoking the animal to strike with its trunk. He died shortly after. No blame attached to the menagerie owner.
