Locust Valley Farm of Athens County Earns Bicentennial Farm Status
Locust Valley Farm, a 244 acre family estate near the Route 550 and 329 junction in Athens County, has been in continuous ownership for five generations. The Locust Valley name derives from the grove of locust trees visible from the road and the light yellow farmhouse with a quilted barn side. Originating in 1817 with Irish settler John Henry, the farm has grown from early holdings along the Ohio River to its current status as Athens County’s only Ohio Bicentennial Farm. Current owner Jim Lochary, his daughter Susan Guar guillo, and her husband Steve reside there, continuing a long lineage that once included brief stays in New Jersey and elsewhere in Ohio. The property has supported sorghum molasses, corn, hay, and dairy cattle and horses, and even hosted Civil War era Home Guard drills. See farm on page AG.

Planning Athens future in a community visioning session
Athens residents gathered at the Athens Community Center to kick off updating the citys comprehensive plan. Paul Logue leads the effort with support from the Athens County Foundation and Ohio University graduates. The group discussed 20 year goals, environment, employment, accessibility, and integrated schools as they plan to drive future growth and redevelop the city with community consensus.
