Firefighters rescue woman and dog from overturned semi crash

At 9 32 a m Richland Area Fire Department responded to a two vehicle crash at United Lane and Route 50 near Athens. A woman trapped in a Baker and Son Trucking semi was freed with minor injuries after a heavy extraction. A passing motorist rescued the dog from the cab. The SUV driver Paige Wells of Texas was cited for failure to yield. The crash blocked eastbound Route 50 and SEE CRASH ON PAGE A2.

Alexander seniors plan busy year before graduation

Albany Alexander High School senior Tyler Dunham targets Ohio University to study psychology and industrial organizational psychology while taking College Credit Plus classes. Freshman Keona Hibbard also starts a demanding Spartan journey as The Messenger follows their freshman to senior years in Athens County.

Nelsonville permits pave way for School Commons plan

Demolition permits issued for 108 and 98 Monroe St as part of the Nelsonville School Commons project allow Woda Group LLC to begin renovation of the former Nelsonville Junior and Senior High Schools. The $25 million plan adds 33 affordable housing units and commercial space with Rocky Brands as a tenant, with demolition to create tenant parking. Dorothy Gettle of the Nelsonville Restoration Foundation calls the first visible work a milestone after 16 years of fundraising and upkeep.
