Nixon pushes new farm program to aid poor and curb subsidies

The Nixon administration unveiled a general farm plan aimed at reducing reliance on subsidies and helping the poorest farmers exit agriculture. About 400,000 low income families could receive roughly $1,000 annually under the proposed family assistance program, while stronger producers would face fewer federal benefits. Secretary Hardin presented the package to the House Agriculture Committee, noting it offers alternatives and costs were not estimated. A pilot retirement plan could retire up to four million acres yearly, but no broad land retirement was proposed.
