An Associated Press brief states British officials call the sinking a tear jerker aimed at dragging the U.S. into war. The refugee liner was torpedoed 600 miles from the Atlantic coast with 293 dead, including 83 children, as Britain mourns and headlines shout Murder Hitler Guilty.
King George VI told a wartime broadcast that Britain stands in the front line against invasion across the channel and air attacks on cities. He said the cause is just and liberties and traditions are at stake for the empire.
British reports describe a massive new four engined Nazi bomber among formations aiding heavy raids on London. The creature’s size draws astonishment as waves of bombers strike the capital while defenses attempt to scatter them across the channel.
Funeral services are set in Jefferson for Common Pleas Judge Charles R. Sargent 56 of Ashtabula County who died of pneumonia in Petoskey Michigan last Saturday.
Maj. Gen. Gilson L. Light and 24 staff officers were ordered to take physical exams before entering the regular army. Light seeks a one year leave to command the 7th Ohio during training at Camp Shelby. Gov. Bricker hopes Light will oversee Ohio conscription. Beightler and three other brigadier generals were called for a year of federal service by Maj. Gen. Hodges.
Army officers and coast guardsmen pulled a crashed Army plane from a swamp near Savannah, Georgia, after a two day search. Brig. Gen. Francis W. Honeycutt and two companions were presumed dead, and only a small portion of the wreck remained visible above mud and water.
State Highway Patrolman Norman Brunn tried to stop a speeding motorist at Sunbury north of Columbus. The ensuing running gun battle carried the chase to Delaware where the trail was lost. Brunn could not count the shots fired as a spotlight and a license tag were shot from the patrol car.
John William Smart aged 69 died in St. Francis Hospital Columbus after several months illness. He lived most of his life near Haydenville. He is survived by his wife five daughters four sons and eighteen grandchildren. Funeral arrangements not completed today.
New York reports Elliott Roosevelt son of the President was ordered to duty as an Air Corps captain. The move marks his formal entry into active service amid wartime staffing needs.
London reports the torpedoed refugee liner 600 miles west of England sank within 20 minutes. Of 406 aboard, 293 perished, 83 children among the dead, while 113 survivors were rescued by a British warship. Survivors recalled heroism amid cold and fear.
President Roosevelt asked all 48 governors to organize the selective service system in their states and appoint state draft directors and local board members. He enclosed a proclamation setting October 16 for 21 to 35 year olds to register and noted 400,000 registrants will be drafted for a year of military training.
Ohio faces losing one of its 24 representatives unless Congress changes reapportionment rules after 1940 census figures. The state gained 242,926 people in ten years, a 3.7 percent rise, far below the national 6.3 percent average, leaving Ohio fourth in population as California neared it.
Republic Steel Corp. announced a program to enlarge iron and steel capacity at plants in Youngstown Cleveland Canton Gadsden and Monroe. Cold rolled capacity at the Cleveland plants will be increased and a fourth 50 ton electric furnace will be installed at Canton next month.
E. Ra Hummel, attorney and former state representative, died Saturday at his Carroll home. Fire damaged grandstands at the Warren County Fairgrounds yesterday in Lebanon.
Washington reports possible new U S restrictions on Japan after Japanese forces enter French Indo China. Officials say oil scrap iron and other strategic materials could face tightening export controls or a full embargo. Aviation gasoline already embargoed. other fuels and materials may be licensing limited or banned for defense needs.
In Tamaulipas State, Gen. Pedro Figuero said three armed uprisings occurred last week against the government. One rebel group, about 30 Almazan sympathizers, backs the claim that Almazan won the presidential vote dismissed by the government in favor of Gen. Manuel Avila Camacho.
Willkie calls for using Bonneville and Grand Coulee power for Northwest industry and domestic service at low rates. He notes government investment of about 270 million dollars and urges completion of the projects for public benefit amid a Western trip across 11 states.
In Dover New Jersey two workers died and six were injured at the U S Army Picatinny Arsenal when employees were disassembling fuses of World War shells. The building was small and had protective screens that limited injuries. This followed a prior fatal powder blast at Hercules Powder in Kenilworth on Sept 12 that killed 50.
The Federal Power Commission announced a postponement of a hearing on Southern Ohio Public Service Company’s application for a new power plant license on the Muskingum River near Zanesville Ohio. The license has been renewed each year since 1930. Commission officials gave no reason for the postponement.
The War Department moved to promote thousands of officers and enlisted men to train conscripts. Fifty seven officers are to receive temporary ranks of brigadier or major general.
FBI Director J Edgar Hoover urged the American Legion to aid in combating foreign ideologies and recruitment efforts. He called for collaboration with the FBI to root out disloyal elements as 12,000 veterans and auxiliaries gathered in Boston for the 22nd annual convention.
The American Iron & Steel Institute reports steel mills will run at 92.5 percent of capacity this week down from 92.9 percent last week. A month earlier output was 91.3 percent and a year ago 83.8 percent. Decline cited due to furnace repairs and expansion work.
Ten year old Phyllis Myers with inheritances totaling 2 419 000 will leave for Cleveland to attend school. Guardianship by Mrs James H Cassidy notes Phyllis received 1 869 000 from her mother Josephine Forsythe and the remainder from her father Phillip A Myers of Ashland Ohio who died in 1932.
McKinley Griffin, 43, of Cleveland died after slipping from a marine leg crane while working as a maintenance man at the Montana Flour Mills. He fell about 700 feet to the ground in the incident.
Ohio State University will refund tuition for the October quarter to students drafted or volunteering for military service. President Howard L. Bevis announced the plan to assist those serving or preparing to serve.
In Hillsborough California the unharmed three year old Marc De Tristan Jr is returned to his family after Wilhelm Jakob Muhlenbroich is captured by woodsmen in River Pine. Federal agents hold the suspect as authorities plan state prosecution under California law.
Week end automobile accidents killed four persons in the Chillicothe area, half the state's fatal toll. Don P. Allen of Clarksburg and Ralph D. Williams of Nutter Fort died in a collision with a Baltimore and Ohio freight train at Slate Mills near Chillicothe. Glenn Salyer of Chillicothe died after a crash en route from a football game, Thad McGee of Hallsville died in a wreck, Max H. Woodgerd of Columbus was fatally injured in a ditch plunge, and William A. Gilliland of Cincinnati drowned in the Ohio River.

Four Industrial School inmates were apprehended today at Millersburg after being injured in a crash involving a stolen car. Lancaster police said the escape occurred yesterday afternoon when they stole a car here and later abandoned it at Lithopolis where another vehicle was taken. the State Highway Patrol notified police.
Washington officials predicted the defeat of the Federal Coal Mine Inspection Measure as leaders moved toward adjournment. Several names were removed from a petition aimed at forcing a vote.
The body of Ella Hoyt aged 85 a former Pomeroy resident who died Sunday in Kansas City Kansas was brought home for funeral services Tuesday at 3 pm at Hersman Kuntz home on West Main Street. She is survived by her daughter Mrs. Kuntz and two sons Phillip Hoyt and Lara J. Lewis all of Kansas City Missouri and two sisters Mrs. Leah Davis and Miss Jennie Moore of Pomeroy.
