Rodney Duicher reports from Washington on why the fiercest Atlantic hurricanes tend to peak in September. Forecaster Charles Mitchell explains that cyclones form in a season from June to November, with most August storms not fully growing into hurricanes until September or October. He notes the role of heat, humidity, warm sea surfaces, and Earth's rotation in steering storms toward land as autumn approaches, while stressing that equinox timing is not the sole cause.
