Dr. Samuel H. Sheppard will face a first degree murder trial on October 18 after a judge denied bail pending further actions. His attorney William Corrigan indicated possible habeas corpus moves while a special call for 75 jurors was announced.
A New York Central streamliner struck a gravel truck at a Mattoon crossing injuring 28 and killing Cary Bryant, 24, of Mattoon, the truck driver. The Southwest Limited derailed nine cars but injuries were limited by the derailed cars not splintering.
Gen Lee Heung Keun, chairman of South Korea's Joint Chiefs, urged the United States to increase and equip Korea's defense forces before withdrawal of four U S divisions and air units. Seoul officials have protested the planned drawdown to avoid leaving Korea helpless against the enemy.

About 35 Ohio farmers marched on the ASC office in Columbus to challenge penalties of 1.12 dollars per bushel on above quota wheat. Led by James Mannix of Greenville, they claim no federal loans or subsidies and that they never signed 1954 quota cards, calling the relief payments “Dear cooperator” letters. They demand the matter be referred to the U.S. district attorney and seek to avoid penalties while asserting they represent independents from 34 counties. ASC chief David Hermann replied that wheat may be marketed only with penalties paid, shaping next year’s crop rules.
Mrs. Iva B. Soncrant of Toledo recounts 40 hours alone with her dead husband in a disabled outboard boat on Lake Erie. After the motor stalled and Joseph Soncrant collapsed, she prayed and fought rising water while trying to attract help, kept afloat by pumping bilges and clinging to hope for her three sons.
A Pittsburgh Bakery fire caused by a defective oven left five Akron firefighters treated. Fireman Howard Fee, 54, suffered a scalp cut from falling plaster while four others needed oxygen for smoke inhalation during the $6,000 blaze.
A rapid early morning blaze on 8 Court Street in Athens damaged the Gallaher Drug Store and a second floor apartment, with smoke and water affecting adjacent shops. In Milford Delaware two public schools closed again amid telephoned violent threats if Negro children attend classes at the white high school. A five officer detail and teachers guarded the buildings as the district suspends classes until further notice.

Hall arrive in Denver for a summer White House conference as Eisenhower readies a speaking tour through Montana Washington Oregon and California. They prepare to review GOP chances to hold Congress with emphasis on key Senate contests and House seats in four states. Hall brings aides James Bassett Robert Humphrey and Val Washington.

In California fifteen Civil Air Patrol chaplains parachuted from a disabled C46 as the plane crashed near the Los Angeles Rehabilitation Farm for Alcoholics. All chaplains and three crew members survived with minor injuries. The pilots and crew included Capt. Thomas Willson Lt. Earl Meredith Jr. and Sgt. Lloyd Plew deployed at about 3000 feet.
