Democratic hopeful George McGovern drew about 7000 supporters at Port Columbus Airport in a labor oriented rally. He planned to tour Western Electric before heading to New Jersey, attacking the Nixon White House over Watergate and the Russian wheat deal and pledging swift post inauguration repatriations.
Across the Syrian Israeli cease fire line gunfire erupted again at dawn with Arab gunners in Syria firing toward the Golan Heights. No casualties were reported as Israeli forces returned fire and tensions mounted over European terror attacks. The Senate voted 48 to 26 to let states divert part of federal highway allotments into rail projects. The provision, attached to an $18 billion highways transit bill, would move 1.6 billion over two years for rail and transit needs while continuing highway aid. Transportation Secretary Volpe praised the move as giving cities flexible options.
