President Kennedy plans a televised address at 6 p.m. EST to rally support for his 11 billion dollar tax reduction bill awaiting House passage. Senate opposition and a possible filibuster over civil rights loom as Republicans demand a binding spending cap before voting.
A speeding freight train collided with a makeshift bus carrying Mexican field workers near Salinas, killing 28 and injuring 35 in the worst California crash. Victims lay along the tracks near Chualar as ambulances ferried the injured to Salinas hospitals.
Rodney C. James, 13, was crushed when a farm tractor overturned on a rural lane near Fireside in Seneca County after he and two companions left the Flat Rocks Children’s Home to ride the tractors. The other boys, aged 12 and 14, were unhurt. James died of internal injuries shortly after the accident. The vehicle caught fire but he was not burned.
The Dionne quints allege in a memoir they were kept at home under Papa Dionne and Dr. Allan Dafoe and tasked with cleaning the mansion. They describe the home as sad and note one sister Emilie died in 1954 from an epilepsy seizure.
Mrs Armiet A Gee 46 of 1934 Eastern Ave Gallia was burned in a flash fire explosion at home while varnishing a floor. She suffered second and third degree burns over more than 50 percent of her body and was admitted to Holzer Hospital where doctors described her condition as critical. Her sister-in-law said her husband Armier Gee smothered the flames with a blanket.

State Police, fire, Civil Defense, and 32 Hannan High School students join a 10 mile sweep as family checks hospitals and relatives for leads. Wolford, 5 feet 6 inches, 150 pounds, wearing khaki pants blue jacket black shoes and arctics, is hard of hearing with a weak voice.
Mrs. Andrew Fischer, mother of quintuplets born two months premature, hopes to leave St. Luke's Hospital soon as the five infants recover. The four girls and a boy remain in guarded care with limited feeding while doctors monitor their weight and health. Fischer expressed concern for her other children at home as the quints gain strength. hospital officials expect a two month stay.
American heiress Gamble Benedict Porumbeanu hides with friends in Zurich as Romanian ex chauffeur husband Andre Porumbeanu arrives from New York seeking divorce details. Three servants gone and two sons kept in an undisclosed private home. Gamble claims misconduct. she controls a $20 million trust and has withdrawn her former power of attorney.
