Parents of Lieutenant Bodnar Receive Posthumous Awards

Nine awards earned by the late First Lt. Joseph Anthony Bodnar were presented to his parents Monday during a ceremony in the mayor's office at City Hall. Among them were two Purple Hearts for wounds in action on Sept. 30, 1967 and a second time he was hit by fire. The Bronze Star and other decorations followed. Bodnar, a 22-year-old who died May 19 from wounds in Vietnam, had served 10 months there after being promoted shortly before death. He was born in Germany, grew up in the United States, attended St. Paul’s Church, Athens High School, and Ohio University. Burial was at Mount Calvary Cemetery after services at St. Paul’s Church.

State seeks Athens County Home land for Route 33 bypass

Ohio State Highway Department wants all 94 acres of the Athens County Children's Home property for the Route 33 bypass. County Commissioners met Monday and weighed a price demand, but took no firm action. They privately discussed terms with Craig Clary of the Marietta division office. Land value and construction costs will inform the county's request to the state. Commission chairman James Edwards said a decision on relocation date and possible razing or moving of the home would follow state talks, likely within two to three weeks. If no price agreement is reached, a local court would decide.

Crime Data Hook Up Brightens After Patrol Sales Talk

Athens county officials and three agencies embrace a LEADS data system after a sales briefing by State Highway Patrol officials. Sheriff Harold Shields says the LEADS unit could be ready by late 1969 with federal grant support and $100 monthly operating costs for lines. Mayor Raymond Shepard cautiously supports the idea as the system would link to state and national memory banks for faster crime data and license plate checks. The plan follows Ohio patrols already using LEADS and aims to speed 21st century police work while weather and river readings update local conditions.
