Gen Mark Clark pledged legal rights and protection for thousands of war prisoners including allied and communist holdouts who refuse repatriation. He praised freedom of choice and urged communication with those held by Reds while a five nation repatriation commission met to decide their fates.
Republicans in Chicago for regional conferences faced the possibility of former Vice President Alben W. Barkley entering the 1954 Kentucky Senate contest. Democratic leaders predicted Barkley would run, setting up a fierce race against incumbent Republican Sen. John Sherman Cooper, who won a narrow 1952 victory as Eisenhower carried the state.
The Army plans a 50 million dollar defense contract awarded to Chrysler Corp. for M51 tank recovery vehicles to be produced at the Detroit Arsenal in Center Line. Chrysler is also to complete an M47 tank contract by about November 1, with no delivery quantity stated.

Louis R. McDaniel 30 of Athens County was captured by Portland police on a stolen auto charge and is sought by Hocking County Sheriff A J Waldron on a bad charge. He allegedly passed a 1260 dollar bad check to Logan dealer Frank Harden and sold a 1949 car with licensed tags before fleeing. FBI also has him for transporting a stolen vehicle across state lines. Last address listed as Athens Route 3.
A Massillon high school girl was killed Wednesday when she and two other students stepped in the path of a fast moving Pennsylvania freight train near the school. One student was seriously injured.
Secretary of State Dulles told the UN General Assembly that imminent occasions demand Soviet sincerity. He outlined five policy goals to ease tension, urged coordinated Western steps, and warned against dilatory Soviet tactics while stressing harmony and avoiding actions that worsen the danger. The speech pressed for Korea unity, Indochina peace, German unity, Austrian independence, and Soviet nonaggression toward its neighbors.
The Air Force will cancel up to 6000 spare jet engines costing about 400 to 500 million dollars. Secretary Wilson and Secretary Talbott said production of aircraft remains unaffected and curbs reflect durability gains and lower attrition since Korea. The five room home of Harry Bus ter Kinniard near Milestone burned to the ground Wednesday afternoon around 5 p.m. He had gone to the barn to milk and returned from a State Road Commission job. His daughter Phyllis 10 first spotted the blaze, with sons Bracy 15 at the scene. No one was home, cause unknown, insurance coverage noted, only a washing machine and breakfast table set survived.
Lt. Col. Jack D. Burnett an administrative officer at Walter Reed Hospital was arrested and charged with stealing a food freezer two air conditioning units and a barbecue grill from Fort Knox Kentucky The FBI says he placed the items in his Silver Spring Maryland home and lied about them Burnett was executive officer of the Army Medical Research Laboratory at Fort Knox from 1951 until last July.
Columbus report quotes Toledo gas consultant Joseph Nathanson who argues Ohio’s furnace installation formula should be dropped. He claims Ohio has about 50,000 fewer gas furnaces than other states served by Columbia Gas System and Columbia subsidiaries. He notes one Ohio heating unit per external unit under the current rule.
A frame building housing a general store owned by Ray Harper and a tavern restaurant owned by Clarence Huffman burned at 1 a.m. in South Bloomingville. A Circleville bus and a Lake Shore Line truck collided head on south of Columbus on U S 23. Merchant Ed wards of Columbus, driver of the truck, is in critical condition. Bus driver Harry Walker, 54, of Stoutsville, was treated for a minor leg injury. Injured also were Karl Kirkendall, 77, Circleville. Carle Kirkendall, 77. Bernard White, 51, Columbus. The truck reportedly tried to pass a car and veered into the bus.

Surgeons at New Orleans Foundation Hospital successfully separated the lower bodies of 8 week old Siamese twins Carolyn Anne and Catherine Anne Mouton. The operation, begun after a fused fourth sacral vertebrae and shared lower intestinal tract were addressed, lasted an hour and a half with no unexpected developments. The twins, daughters of Lafayette Mayor Ashton J. Mouton, remain bright and normal aside from their connection.
Sen H Alexander Smith says he was amazed at actions by former Secretary Martin Durkin that the Eisenhower administration broke an agreement on Taft Hartley law revision. Smith, chair of the Senate Labor Committee, notes talks continued to adjournment Aug 3 with White House and committee members involved. He says fall talks aim to draft legislation for January, while Durkin says Eisenhower agreed 19 amendments should be submitted to Congress.
Sen. Wiley of Wisconsin urged a mutual defense pact for the Far East as soon as Southeast Asian nations are ready. He said the United States should push collective security in the Far East and build a third major pact after the North Atlantic and Rio treaties.
In Columbus State Auditor James A. Rhodes lauds Troy Ohio for running a broad range of public enterprises in the 10 000 population bracket. Fort Wayne factory worker Charles E. Roberts, 25, is charged with first degree murder in the death of Dale Young, 27, a Barberton, Ohio, truck driver, on August 21.
