Alvanley Johnston 76 longtime grand chief engineer of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers died after a heart attack at his Shaker Heights home. W Averell Harriman declines to act as messenger on Mossadegh’s two week ultimatum to Britain to restart oil talks. Mossadegh threatens expulsion of about 300 British technicians at Abadan if talks are not reopened. An embassy officer delivered Harriman’s reply to Mossadegh in Tehran.

In Coral Gables Florida a nine year old girl remained in fair condition after her 10 year old companion pulled her from the jaws of a six foot alligator. Patrolman George Tomlinson said Jerry Gustafson suffered a broken right arm and heavy blood loss from the mauling. The incident occurred in a rock pit where the reptile had been raised. the boy Parker Stratt dragged the girl to safety and the alligator disappeared.
