OU Freshman Class of 1700 Welcomed by President

Ohio University President John C. Baker addressed about 1700 freshmen in Memorial Auditorium urging toughminded thinking and demand for facts. He outlined five enrollment pressure points housing dining space classroom capacity and faculty while noting 5000 expected total registration with branches in Portsmouth Chillicothe and Zanesville. The plan includes temporary dormitories and a new Lower Campus cafeteria amid delayed construction and staffing expansion. Meanwhile Athens felt the campus surge as diners and sidewalks filled and few restaurants remained open.
