Air Force Plane Crashes Killing Twenty at Manzano Base

An four engine Air Force plane crashed into a mountainside at Manzano Base near Albuquerque killing all 20 aboard. The craft took off from Kirtland AFB at 11 45 p m and exploded on impact three minutes later near nuclear storage facilities. Authorities said no survivors and bodies were being recovered in a predawn search.

Senator Returns Unspent Office Funds Zorinsky Gives Back 313000

Freshman Senator Edward Zorinsky of Nebraska says he will return 313,016 in unspent office funds to the treasury when the fiscal year ends on September 30. He cites restraint on spending for aides, telephones, travel, and office expenses and plans to give staffers a 7.5 percent pay raise in October. He also declined 139,278 for hiring committee aides, arguing taxpayers cannot bear all federal services. He says his stance has stirred chatter among colleagues but denies being a crusader or lone ranger.

Ohio election day registration law faces challenge

A taxpayer suit filed with the Ohio Supreme Court seeks to remove the proposed constitutional amendment from the ballot. Proponent Art Peterson of Ohioans for Honest Elections calls the lawsuit a plot by political bosses to block voter voice. The measure would require 30 days of pre registration and annual voting for those on the rolls, while the existing law allows election day registration with immediate eligibility.
