Rain last night reduced attendance at a Athens meeting of farmers interested in signing a wheat curtailment contract with the federal government. County agent T. H. Johnson hosted the session with Ohio State University staff W. W. Brownfield and Paul Fankhauser. Four farmers signed applications. many others expressed intentions. Farmers must sign by Sept. 25. applications carry no obligation and signing is not required.
CHICAGO Sept 15 The Sharkey King Levinsky heavyweight bout at Comiskey Park was postponed from tonight to Monday because threatening weather forced the change.
Twenty small high schools across Athens Hocking Gallia Meigs and Vinton counties would be abolished under the Gunsett School Bill now before the Ohio Legislature. State Education officials back the measure and estimate a $250000 annual saving. Teachers would be reassigned if possible.
Hunter Mark Jenkinson of Hooper Street was wounded by pellets while awaiting a squirrel in a wooded area between Cananville and Guysville. Carl Pennell, another hunter, said he did not see Jenkinson until after the shot. Jenkinson’s right arm and knee were hit. he received care at Sheltering Arms Hospital and returned home. Ohio’s first hunting fatality, Dave Dietrich, 37, died after being accidentally shot in the back of the head on George Smith’s farm.
Hollywood reports Maurice Chevalier, the French film star, was slightly injured when his car overturned after a collision with another machine. He was unharmed aside from minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
First week 1983 total enrollment is 1,322, down ten from 1,332 last year. Breakdown shows Central 191, East Side 233, West Side 196, Junior High 347, Senior High 415. Last year’s first week counts were Central 188, East Side 238, West Side 108, Junior High 396, Senior High 407.
The new Ohio standardization bill took effect requiring growers to stamp name address and grade on each fruit or vegetable package. Standard grades are those recognized by the Department of Agriculture. Growers may mark grower's grade or unclassified if not using standard grades. Repackers must stamp name address and grade on all packages. Second hand containers require a not original container mark.

Militant opposition to repealing the Eighteenth Amendment surfaced at the Pomeroy Baptist Association annual meeting in First Baptist Church. The group pledged to oppose ratification and also debated extending school aid to parochial schools, opposing Catholic Church funding for sectarian purposes.
At Kenwood Country Club Cincinnati Max Marston of Philadelphia led Jack Munger of Dallas two up after the morning round in the National Amateur Championship semi final. A second 18 hole round this afternoon will decide the finalists. George T Dunlap Jr of Flushing led Lawson Little of San Francisco one up in the other semi final.
President Roosevelt offered use of the White House for Ike Hoover funeral services but Mrs. Hoover declined preferring a simple ceremony in Glenwood cemetery chapel. Telegrams were sent to widows of six presidents including Harrison, Roosevelt, Cleveland Preston, Taft, Wilson, and Coolidge. Services are set for 2 p.m. with Julian Yates delivering the eulogy.
Los Angeles. Golden haired Claire Windsor faces retirement after a jury verdict ruling she stole Alfred Read Jr. from his wife Marian Read in a sensational heart balm trial. The seven men and five women awarded Read damages of $75,000 as Windsor vows appeal.
Cincinnati reports 17 year old Irvin C Ball Jr the city junior golf champion of 1932 was killed by a lightning bolt on the Hyde Park Country Club course. Teammate Frank Kuglar 18 was knocked down and James Boyd Jr 24 felt the shock when the bolt struck near them. Ball was to be buried in Uniontown Pa after his body is taken home by his parents.
Congressman Thomas A. Jenkins of Ironton will address Class Six at the Methodist Church Sunday morning. The class meets at 9 30 o clock, per O E Reading president, and all men of Athens are welcome.
Athens County unemployed are invited to register at 8:30 AM Saturday at the Armory in Athens to aid work placement under the National Reemployment Service. Those on relief lists are automatically registered. others not on relief lists are urged to sign up. Local cooperation and employer notices are requested. Unemployed from York, Trimble, Dover, Ames, and Bern Townships should wait for registration at Nelsonville, Glouster, or Chauncey later.
The Ohio Senate adopted the Annat Bill as an emergency measure. It extends deadlines for NRA bond issue certification from 60 to 30 days before elections and cuts malt tax from 10 to 3 cents a pound. The measure also authorizes suspending beer permits during investigations and defeated a proposal to pay the federal government a per acre fee for CCC work profits.
In San Jose on September 15 defense counsel argued that David A. Lamson's relationship with a blonde did not motive his wife's murder. Lamson, a 30 year old Stanford University Press manager, awaits closing arguments as the prosecution has yet to present its case.
