Mt Zion Baptist Church returns to Athens preservation group
About 30 people attended a meeting in Athens where an architect outlined needed repairs and preliminary costs to bring Mt Zion Baptist Church back into use. In July the church was deeded to the Mt Zion Baptist Church Preservation Society after the state challenged a former owner. Community members hope the building will again serve as a church or gathering place while noting years of neglect since its 1906 origins and 1909 dedication. Edward Berry and his wife Mattie donated land and funds for the church.
