Ohio University runs large staff to handle campus calls
A university with nearly 17 000 students maintains a staff of 10 to manage about 2 500 daily calls. Communications Director Tim Thomas notes most calls are needless and many seek numbers or information beyond what the university can provide. The switchboard operates 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. six days and noon to 11 p.m. on Sunday with two operators per shift. The directory covers fall to spring quarters, and students bear changes to dorm addresses. Thomas, a former General Telephone engineer, leads a team that includes Judy Deardorff and seven operators.
