Kidnapped Union Leaders Targeted in Gastonia Trial Turmoil

In Gastonia North Carolina on September 10 16 textile strikers are on trial for the fatal shooting of Gastonia Police Chief Aderholt. Three National Textile Workers' Union leaders Cliff Saylor Morris Wells and C M Sell were abducted by an anti communist mob believed to be aiming to lynch defense attorney Tom Jimison. The mob seized propaganda at the International Labor Defense office and raided a Gastonia boarding house before heading toward Charlotte. The mob demanded Jimison and others be strung up and police protected the targets as the group moved toward Charlotte. Judge M W Barnhill declared a mistrial earlier in the day amid mounting strain.
