Census figures show every rural township in Athens County declined over the past two decades while mining townships gained. Townships such as Alexander, Ames, Bern, Carthage, Lee, Lodi, Rome, Troy fell 100 to 400 people. Athens, Dover, Canaan, Trimble, York gained. Athens city population more than doubled since 1900.
