Ohio Senate leaders plan to offer a two cent sales tax increase with no personal income tax to break a deadlock. The plan would raise about 710 million dollars over two years and include an 85 million dollar property tax rebate for low and middle income families.
Regents Chancellor John Millett said uncertainty remains over a $30 quarterly fee increase for state universities. The Board of Regents has not approved the hike and the Legislature has not enacted a budget authorizing it. If the hikes are rejected, schools may have to refund the already collected $30 per quarter.
Logan City schools opened with few teachers present as 142 educators stayed in a professional study session at the National Guard Armory to protest the board of education’s new certificated personnel guidelines. Superintendent Sarbalas said 42 teachers and 11 administrators reported for duty, while substitutes were called in and classes continued.
Washington AP reported a sharp rise in the U S coal mining death rate for July and August after five months of a 25 year safety record. Interior Department officials cited lower fatalities in the first seven months but acknowledged uncertainties as the July August rate nearly doubled May June. Eighty six miners died in the first five months, a rate of .73 fatalities per million man hours. the six month rate dropped to .69.
In Columbus the Senate Highways and Urban Affairs Committee recommended passage of a bill requiring one year residency for Ohio welfare recipients. Sponsor Rep. Rodney H. Hughes said Ohio can show a compelling need. The measure already passed the House and goes to the Senate Rules Committee.
