Former Editor of Northwest Slain at Night

Howard Guilford a former newspaper editor and press freedom advocate was killed by a shotgun blast while driving home in Minneapolis. At 40 he had previously survived a gun attack and led campaigns against vice. His paper the Saturday Press battled the Minnesota suppression law later struck down by the Supreme Court.

Former Officer Dies For Murder on Long Island

OSSINING N Y Sept 7 UP Alphonse Brengard paid with his life for the slaying of Patrolman John Kennedy on a lonely Long Island road nearly six years ago. He was electrocuted at Sing Sing last night for the murder of a Nassau County policeman who was wounded while investigating a parked automobile on a road between Woodmere and Valley Stream July 22 1928. Kennedy paralyzed by a bullet in his spine lived four years after the shooting.

Dr Charles Cochrane of Brooklyn describes waking to smoke and flames aboard the Morro Castle. He leaped through a porthole into a packed lifeboat, watched the bow of the ship engulfed in fire, and reached safety after a perilous sea passage with about 80 survivors at Spring Lake authorities.

Blaze Started In Library Of Morro Castle

Six Morro Castle crew members testified the fire began in the library at the fore of the steamship and not from lightning. They said flames swept midships, hindering passengers, and that crews found no water pressure in the hose as they attempted to subdue the blaze. Lifeboats on their side were deployed, while the opposite side could not be released due to danger.

Newsfolk seek Morro Castle survivors in Ward Line offices

An agitated crowd of several hundred gathered at Ward Line offices in New York seeking news of Morro Castle survivors. Officials reported some survivors removed from the ship and that the vessel remained afloat about a mile or two off Spring Lake or Asbury Park. Captain Robert Willmott died of a heart attack, with his death time set at 7:45 p.m. yesterday, contrary to earlier reports.
