Groups clash over Athens County charter in Ohio Supreme Court
In a case over the proposed Athens County charter, several groups filed legal briefs. Affiliated Construction Trades Ohio Foundation, Ohio Chamber of Commerce, National Association of Royalty Owners and the American Petroleum Institute urged the Supreme Court to permit ballot placement. Ohio Farm Bureau Federation opposed the measure, arguing vagueness and potential conflicts with existing duties. The committee seeks a writ of mandamus to force the elections board to place the charter on the ballot, while board and prosecutors contest the request.

Athens council splits on arts and recreation director pay
In a 3 3 tie Council President Chris Kinsley cast the deciding vote to approve the starting salary for a new Athens arts parks and recreation director set at 50 percent of the pay grade or 71884. The mayor may hire without council approval if pay is 25 percent or less of the pay grade. The pay range is 59804 to 83865. Critics questioned the high starting rate calling it akin to buying a Porsche over a Chevy while supporters urged trust in administration to hire a competent leader.
