Odds Against Bill Allowing Presidential TV Debates

Washington AP reports backing Rep. Lionel Van Deerlin says odds are 24-1 against passage of a bill to open televised debates for presidential candidates. The measure, already Senate approved, would exempt networks from equal time rules, contingent on bipartisan support from Humprey and Nixon and time guarantees for Wallace. House action remains uncertain as committee members clash over the plan.
