A vintage advertisement touts Ekonemy as smart money use and highlights a closing sale at Kaler Palmer and McGrath. It promises drastic price cuts on summer goods, fabrics, dresses, curtains, parasols, cashmeres, shirts, pants, corsets, and embroidery with yards priced from fractions of a dollar to several dollars.
A young colored man John Turner was lynched in Fayetteville West Virginia after being held in Athens jail on a murder charge. The Athens Asylum trustees elected Wilber F. Scott as steward, with Hamblin remaining until September 15. Other items report Democratic and Republican activity across Ohio, typhoid in New Concord, various deaths, local crime, and agricultural news from Marietta to Cincinnati.
The occultation occurred Tuesday evening with Athens calculations predicting the moon hiding Jupiter from 9 12 to 10 13. The University observed the disappearance and verification was noted, but clouds hid the reappearance. Future occultations are scarce for years with eight in late 1592 but none in 1890 1891 locally.
Farmers with large peach orchards reap small fortunes again as fruit fetches up to four dollars in city markets. The price reflects profits of various middlemen from orchard to consumer.
