Judicial release granted in major Athens County drug case

Nearly seven months after the final defendant pled guilty in a large heroin trafficking operation led by Anthony Spears and Megan Vore, the first inmate received judicial release and a second seeks release. John Rutter, 56, pleaded guilty in 2015 and was granted release after six months. Amy Degarmore, 34, filed for release, claiming rehabilitation efforts and desire to reunite with her son, but prosecutors urged denial. Among those sentenced, Spears and Vore received the longest terms, with other defendants getting prison terms ranging from two to ten years and several facing community control. A second stage hearing for Hammon is set for Sept. 26. The county prosecutor’s office continues to tackle the local drug problem, noting seizures of cocaine and cash, while offering no further comment.
